The conference, Barbarians at the Gate? The Impact of Digital Natives and
Emerging Technologies on the Future of Information Services, will take place
February 22 – 24, 2009 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia, PA. It will
take a look at how the born digital generation, with a lifetime of information
seeking skills shaped by search engines and the Web, will impact the scholarly,
scientific and business information services that they are beginning to use in
their professional lives.
Highlights include:
• A provocative opening keynote by John Palfrey, author of Born
Digital: Understanding the First Generation of Digital Natives will look how
the ever-evolving Internet is fundamentally changing information behaviors as
we move from generation to generation.
• A panel of Digital Natives discussing the information tools that
they use and their perspective on libraries and traditional information
services
• The 2009 Miles Conrad Lecture from Dame Lynne Brindley, CEO of the
British Library
• Survey results on the acceptance and use of social media in
academia and industry from Dr. Nora Barnes, Director of the Center for
Marketing Research, University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth
• A Look at some transforming technologies that will facilitate the
access and use of your information products and services by Digital Natives
around the globe
• New business practices emerging in libraries and in publishing
houses as a result of the information behavior of Digital Natives
• A closing keynote on the impact of mobile technologies and new
digital media on the future of communication and search from Dr. Mimi Ito,
Research Scientist, Institute for Multimedia Literacy, Annenberg Center,
University of California
