NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellows Program, 2009-2010

Call for Applications

The Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) is pleased to announce the 2009-2010 year of the leadership program jointly sponsored by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and AAHSL. The NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellows Program is focused on preparing emerging leaders for the position of library director in academic health sciences libraries.

“The partnership with NLM has demonstrated its value in encouraging and preparing the next generation of leaders of our libraries,” said AAHSL president Julia Sollenberger. “Its merit is recognized by institutions across the country as they recruit for director positions.”

Fellows will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in a variety of learning settings, including exposure to leadership in another environment. They will be paired with mentors who are academic health sciences library directors. In addition to the individual relationship with their mentors, fellows benefit from working collaboratively with other fellows and mentors. Experienced program faculty and mentors will provide content and facilitation for the cohort. The program takes advantage of flexible scheduling and an online learning community to minimize disruption to professional and personal schedules. The sponsors will provide financial support for up to five fellows and will underwrite travel and meeting expenses.

Thirty-five fellows have participated in the program since its inauguration in 2002. To date, thirteen fellows have assumed director positions.

“The program was key in securing my job as director and continues to sustain me,” noted Neville Prendergast, fellow, class of 2007-2008, and director at Tulane University. “It provided the learning environment to interact with my mentor and other leading directors very willing to share their ideas and experience. It places you in the position of ‘thinking like a director.’”

Chris Shaffer, fellow, class of 2006-2007, and university librarian at Oregon Health & Science University, said, “My mentor ‘opened the books’ to me and taught me about budgets of public and private universities. As a new director, I often turn to the other fellows in my cohort for advice and community, and I can get support from all the mentors who have participated in the program.”

Gary Freiburger, mentor, class of 2008-2009, and director at University of Arizona, stated, “My fellow’s visit to our library gave me a chance to see our operations through fresh eyes. As a mentor, I not only have the chance to rethink my assumptions, I also have the benefit of working with a cohort of directors who share information and experiences.”

Program Overview

The one-year program design is multi-faceted: three in-person leadership institutes; attendance at an Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) annual meeting; a yearlong fellow/mentor relationship; Web-based courses and discussions on issues related to library leadership; and a two-week site visit to the mentor’s home library (in one or two-week segments).

The program is designed to:

· Introduce fellows to leadership theory and practical tools for implementing change at organizational and professional levels;

· Introduce fellows to critical issues facing academic health sciences libraries;

· Develop meaningful professional relationships between fellows and mentors that give fellows access to career guidance and support;

· Expose fellows to another academic health sciences library and its institutional leadership under the guidance of their mentors;

· Examine career development and provide models of directors to fellows;

· Create a cohort of leaders who will draw upon each other for support throughout their careers;

· Promote diversity in the leadership of the profession; and

· Offer recognition to emerging leaders and enhance the competitive standing of fellows as they pursue director positions.

Application

The NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellows Program is currently accepting applications and nominations for the August 3, 2009, deadline for potential fellows and mentors for the 2009-2010 experience. Candidates for fellow should have a strong interest in pursuing a directorship in academic health sciences libraries, as well as a minimum of five years of department head level or higher responsibility, or equivalent experience, in an academic health sciences library, hospital library, or other library-related setting. Applications from qualified minority candidates are encouraged. Mentors should have at least five years’ experience as director of an academic health sciences library.

Margaret McKinley Student Scholarship Essay Competition

The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (LACASIST) is sponsoring the 16th Annual Margaret McKinley Student Scholarship Essay Competition. This competition, first established in 1992, and renamed in memory of the late Margaret McKinley in 1993, is intended to encourage students in Library and Information Science programs to consider the benefits of participation in the activities of professional societies.

*AWARD:* The winner will receive reimbursement funding up to US $1,000 for:

* registration, airfare and hotel expenses to attend the ASIST 2009 Annual Meeting, “Thriving on Diversity - Information Opportunities in a Pluralistic World”, November 6-11, 2009, Vancouver, B.C., Canada
* a one-year membership in ASIST

Two runners-up will receive one-year memberships in ASIST.
*ELIGIBILITY:*
All students (including those graduating in spring 2009) enrolled in Library and Information Science programs (in-person or distance education) at universities within the areas represented by the Los Angeles Chapter of ASIST (Hawaii, California, Australia, and New Zealand) are eligible to enter. Students residing in one of the areas represented by LACASIST (Hawaii, California, Australia, and New Zealand) and attending Library and Information Science Programs (LIS) distance education programs outside of the areas represented by LACASIST are eligible to enter. Students enrolled in graduate programs (at universities within the areas represented by the Los Angeles Chapter of ASIST) not identified as LIS programs may be eligible. Interested students in non-LIS programs must include in the essay submission (in addition to other essay requirements below), a statement explaining how the program mission relates to ASIST and how ASIST membership and conference attendance would be beneficial.

SLA 100th Anniversary

On May 21, 2009, the San Andreas and Francisco Bay Region Chapters of SLA held a joint 100th Anniversary dinner meeting at the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library & Museum. Coincidentally, there were 100 people in attendance! It is amazing to realize that the Special Libraries Association was started in 1909!

The evening began with a delicious dinner and continued with short remarks from a special panel of local speakers hosted by Bill Fisher, SJSU-SLIS Professor. The panelists were, Cindy Hill, Libby Trudell, Deborah Hunt and Richard Geiger. They all addressed topics related to “what is happening in libraries today,’ after which questions and comments were taken from the audience.

Cindy began the discussion by saying how important it is to know what our users want, what format they want it in, and where they are coming from. Who are the people walking through our “digital doors?” She pointed out that the characteristics of library users differ from generation to generation. The youngest users now are less than 10 years old and are sometimes referred to as “Millennials” or “Digital Natives.” They are growing up in the digital forest and their digital identity has merged with their total identity. Older users are concerned with privacy issues, especially as they relate to identity theft, but younger users are broadcasting their identities on Facebook, Plaxo and LinkedIn. Understanding our users will strengthen our services and viability in the marketplace.

Libby talked about some users’ comments, such as “why do we need libraries when there are so many ways to find information online?” She observed that it is like saying “why do we need road maps when there are so many roads?” She noted that what users really need are savvy “information mapmakers.” There are many roles that librarians can play in mapping the future of information delivery.

Deborah asked how many attendees use the Wiki SLA http://wiki.sla.org/dashboard.action

She noted that SLA is trying to provide services to its members that will assist in keeping abreast of new information delivery technologies. As an assignment, she asked each attendee to logon and explore this site. Deborah is the author of “23 Things” that appears in the Wiki as part of the Innovation Lab—23 things that we can do to make ourselves more viable in the information marketplace.

Richard Geiger urged us to find role models in our specialties and to keep learning. Things have changed dramatically in the news field that he specialized in during the course of his career. He is in the process of retooling and adjusting to the changes in the marketplace.

South Pasadena Library Presents Legendary Poet Jack McCarthy and Live Music by Gypsy's Kiss on Thurs. 6/25 at 7 p.m.

South Pasadena Public Library and the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library are proud to join forces with the Arroyo Vista Inn and the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce to present nationally known Jack McCarthy (“The Standup Poet”) and Gypsy’s Kiss, an Orange County-based Celtic band. The free, not-to-be-missed event will be presented on Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the South Pasadena City Council Chambers at 1414 Mission Street. The event is suitable for all ages and no tickets or reservations are necessary. However, due to limited seating, only 100 audience members will be able to personally experience McCarthy’s poetic magic. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and fans and other enthusiasts are encouraged to arrive shortly thereafter.

McCarthy was born in Massachusetts and now lives in Seattle. He began writing poetry in the 60s, but did not begin performing his works until the 69s when he took his daughter to a Boston Club intending to get her interested in slam poetry. Instead, he ended up taking the mike, and since then has enjoyed a remarkable rise in the world of poetry. On stage he does not stick to any specific regimen of poetic style but rather presents his poems loosely, in a style similar to that of stand-up comedy. McCarthy starred in the documentary film SlamNation directed by Paul Devlin and for five years hosted a poetry cable television show that presented an impressive cast of famous poets, as well as many unknowns.

Jack’s own poems are marked with straightforward language and packed with emotion. Among his influences are Robert Frost, Dylan Thomas, and Garrison Keillor. He doesn’t think of himself as a “performance poet, “but as a “standup poetry guy,” a writer of poems that perform themselves. He has published two chapbooks: Grace Notes and Too Old to Make Excuses (But Still Young Enough to Make Love); a 60-minute cassette, Poems For Hannah; and a CD, Breaking Down Outside a Gas Station, A major book, Say Goodnight, Grace Notes was released to rave reviews in 2003.

The American Library Association’s Booklist says that “McCarthy brings his compelling experiences to his poetry with nimble humor, hard-won wisdom, and a raconteur’s knack for telling diabolically barbed stories…concrete, candid, personal, and utterly captivating.” Thomas Lux has written, “The only ambition he seems to have is to tell the truth as best he can in poems. That is a very worthy ambition, but not his only one. He also hopes to be remembered as an integral member of the movement to restore poetry to its rightful place in everyday American life so that when Americans think of poetry they don’t think of school and homework, but of laughter and tears; a shortcut to the heart.” His work has also appeared in many magazines and anthologies, including The Spoken Word Revolution.

Gypsy’s Kiss is one of Orange County’s best-known traditional Celtic music proponents. The 5-person group plays all traditional music with traditional instruments, including fiddle, guitar, wooden flute, whistles, bass, and harmonica. Several members share the vocal duties.

Although the live audience capacity is strictly limited, the event will be broadcast live on Channel 19 and replayed at various times. Special thanks to Cesar Rhodes, Channel 19, John Mann Productions, The South Pasadena Review, and the offices of the South Pasadena City Clerk and City Manager.

San Diego Area Law Libraries (SANDALL) Grants

The San Diego Area Law Libraries (SANDALL) Grants Program is proud to offer the following grants to SANDALL Members for the following upcoming event:

2 meeting registration awards* to attend the 2009 AALL Annual Meeting and Conference "2.0 Innovate" Washington D.C. July 25 - 28 2009.

Deadline for applications May 22, 2009.

PURPOSE: The SANDALL Grants Program provides financial assistance to newer law librarians or library science students who hold promise of future involvement in SANDALL and the law library profession. Preference is given to newer members of SANDALL.

Qualifications: An applicant must meet all of the following criteria to be considered for the award:
· be a member or student member of SANDALL;
· Previous awardees' may apply and be considered however first time and other applicants will be given priority. If circumstances prevent a recipient from using the grant, it reverts to the Committee; however, the recipient remains eligible to apply another year.
· submit a timely and complete application.

The Association of Children's Librarians of Northern California (ACL) Scholarships

The Association of Children's Librarians of Northern California (ACL) invites students of children's librarianship and/or children's literature to apply for one of three annual membership scholarships. Discover a network of active Bay Area children's librarians who meet monthly to share their passion for children's literature and libraries. The three annual scholarships cover the cost of a year's membership in ACL, the 11 issues of BayViews and attendance at the annual Institute. The winner of this scholarship would be expected to attend monthly meetings in the East Bay and to review books and partake in the business of the organization to a reasonable extent.

Who is eligible?
Anyone currently in Library School who may be considering working with children; librarians considering a possible change; para-professionals working in school libraries; teachers who may be considering moving to school or public library positions; college students who may be considering library work with children. Students considering or embarking on their studies in children's librarianship will find an encouraging and challenging community of like-minded individuals.

ACL Scholarships
The Association of Children's Librarians of Northern California (ACL) offers three annual membership scholarships in tribute to Dorothy Helfeld, a member and reviewer for this organization from 1992 until her death in 2008. ACL has met monthly in the San Francisco Bay Area since the 1930s to review newly published children's books. 2009 Veronica Maclay Student Grant

The Government Documents Special Interest Section of the American
Association of Law Libraries (GD-SIS) is pleased to announce the
availability of the 2009 Veronica Maclay Student Grant. For 2009, the
grant winner may apply the grant toward the student registration costs
for the AALL Annual Meeting & Conference (July 25-28) and CONELL
(Conference of Newer Law Librarians) (July 25), both in Washington, DC,
and for associated travel and lodging costs, up to a maximum of
$1,000.00.

The grant is available to students currently enrolled in an ALA
accredited library and information studies master's program. Preference
will be given to LIS students who demonstrate interest in government
information and a career in law librarianship.

Reference Institute at LAPL

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY!

Los Angeles Public Library is now accepting applications for their next Reference Institute, to be held on four Fridays: April 17, 24 and May 1, 8, 2009, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Central Library, 630 W. 5th Street, LA 90071.

The Reference Institutes, funded by the IMLS and designed for participants in the IMLS/ LA Scholars Grant, have additional openings for 6 current second-year library school students. The purpose of the Reference Institutes is to share with library students the variety, challenge and satisfaction of performing reference in a major urban library.

This Reference Institute will feature a mix of online resources instruction and hands-on reference experience at a Central Library Subject Department Reference Desk.

6 slots in the Reference Institute are reserved for second year library school students from UCLA and SJSU. Each selected student will receive a $200.00 stipend in addition to this outstanding opportunity to learn more about the skills needed and the tasks performed by librarians. While there are currently only six slots open, additional students will be wait-listed in case of extra openings occurring.

The Grace and Harold Sewell Memorial Fund will award two 12-month, paid "Learning Partnerships" placing experienced health sciences librarians within leading health care organizations for the purpose of both partners gaining a greater understanding of how best information sciences can be effectively applied in each environment. This on-the-edge fellowship offers mid-career librarians the opportunity to be fully immersed in the environment of a health care organization. The fellow will participate in team settings designed to utilize the librarian's skills and knowledge in non-traditional ways, resulting in a tangible and valuable contribution to the host organization. * San Antonio Metropolitan Public Health District's mission is to provide leadership and services for San Antonio and Bexar County to prevent illness and injury, promote healthy behaviors, and protect against health hazards. As a local governmental public health agency Metro Health works at the front line of community health by providing essential health surveillance, laboratory services, education and outreach, emergency response programs, regulatory activities and policy interventions. The Learning Partnership Librarian will take a leadership role in the development and implementation of two major department initiatives: (1) A comprehensive Employee Education & Development Program; and (2) An Information & Communications program to expand the use of information technology to promote awareness of Metro Health resources and services and respond to public information needs. Supplementing Metro Health as host of a Learning Partnership Librarian, the San Antonio Regional Campus of The University of Texas School of Public Health and the University of Texas Health Science Center Library have committed as partners to provide resources and mentorship for the Learning Partnership.

Submissions are now being accepted for the Joe Ann Clifton Student Award 2009 from the IT Division of SLA. This award is intended to promote participation in the SLA Annual Conference by an exceptional library science student. The recipient of this award will receive:

* Student membership in SLA for one (1) year.
* Reimbursement for expenses to attend the SLA Annual Conference not
to exceed $1,500 and limited to the following:
o Economy class round-trip airfare to the Annual Conference.
o Student registration for the Annual Conference (including
the IT Business Meeting).
o Lodging during the conference.

o Entries may be a paper which the applicant has written or is
preparing for a class but has not been published. Only one
paper per applicant will be accepted.
o IT reserves the right not to award the prize if it is the
opinion of the judges that no submission is worthy of the
award.
o IT will retain first publication rights of the winning paper.

Course description

What is copy cataloging? It is not the same as original cataloging; it has its own special procedures and guidelines to be followed. This workshop provides an introduction to finding cataloging records that you can copy, explaining some of the more obvious challenges and some neglected database issues, with a brief look at essential editing. You will need to come to the Book Blitz (4 days) workshop to know how to do a really superb job of editing records that you copy, but this workshop will get you started in the basic principles of copy cataloging.

Topics covered:

* How to read a MARC Record for searching, matching and editing
* Search terms and their sources
* Matching books and records
* Special matching problems--Dates
* Special matching problems—CIP
* How to recognize what is wrong with a record, so that you can either fix it yourself or report it to someone else who can.

For example:

· Wrong indicators (especially filing and tracing indicators)

· Badly coded 008 (Fixed field)

· Missing subject headings

· Duplicate match keys

· Unverified headings

For a beginning cataloger, this workshop is the second step in your long journey to excellence in cataloging. What is MARC and how does it work with cataloging to function effectively in your catalog? Have you ever wondered:

Emerald Research Grant Awards

Emerald Research Grant Awards

"The Emerald Group Publishing Limited has a long-standing commitment to
support the research community via a number of methods including doctoral
and research fund awards, benefiting both those at the outset of their
academic careers and the more established researchers."

The Emerald Research Grant Award will be awarded to individuals seeking
support to conduct research in business librarianship. The funds may be
used at the discretion of the award recipients. Award recipient must be an
ALA member or at least one member of a collaborative team must be an ALA
member. Recipients may be asked to present their findings at a public
BRASS event within two years of receiving the award (at the discretion of
the BRASS Executive Committee). Recipients will also be required to
acknowledge the Emerald Research Grant when publishing or presenting their
research.

Two $5,000 awards will be presented. The awards (check and citation) will
be presented at the RUSA Awards Ceremony at the annual conferences each
year. Recipients will be required to attend the RUSA Awards Ceremony.
Selection of Review Committee

A committee consisting of three members of BRASS will review proposals and
select the award recipients. An Emerald representative will serve as
ex-officio (non-voting) member to provide input and suggestions. Specific
duties of committee members will include soliciting proposals and
selecting winners for each of the two years for which this award will be
given.

Deadline: Research proposals will be due by the business day of February

Screening of Candidates/Review of Proposals
Candidates will be asked to submit a detailed proposal outlining their
proposed research project; methodology, scope and timetable; how this
project fits into the existing literature; and projected outcomes,
including a statement outlining how this research will benefit the library
profession. Candidates? proposals will be reviewed for thoroughness;
potential to positively impact the library profession; and potential to
provide a useful addition to the existing library literature. Proposals
will be accepted from both individual researchers and those working
collaboratively. At least one member of a collaborative team must be a
member of ALA.

Governor Releases 2009-10 Budget

Today, New Years Eve Day, the Governor’s Office released his 2009-10 Budget, which was not expected to be released until Friday January 9, 2009. The Budget projects a deficit in the current year of $14.8 billion, which, if unaddressed, will grow to almost $41.8 billion by the end of the 2010 fiscal year. Noting that he has declared a “fiscal emergency,” and called Special Sessions of the Legislature November 6th, December 1st, and again on December 19th, the Governor says it is imperative that solutions be enacted immediately, as opposed to waiting until the 2009-10 Budget is approved by the Legislature next summer.

The Governor’s proposed Budget solutions include many of his earlier proposals as well as provisions put forth by the Democrats, December 19th, during the Special Session. Expenditure reductions account for about 42% of the proposed $41.8 billion in solutions, followed by new revenues of 34%, “Securitizing the Lottery” to generate $5 billion, or approximately 12%, and another $5 billion or 12% through borrowing. Almost $4.7 billion of the borrowed funds would be through selling Reimbursement Warrants (commonly known as RAW’s) in July of 2009.

Most of the reductions would be in the areas of education, health and human services, and the corrections and rehabilitation budget. Savings would also be generated by requiring state employees to take two days furlough per month, beginning February 1, 2009, and the elimination of 2 state holidays. The major revenue proposals include: A temporary 1.5 cent increase in the sales tax through December 2011, broadening the sales tax to appliance and furniture repair, vehicle repair, veterinary services, amusement and sporting events, and golf, instituting a nickel-per-drink tax, adopting a 9.9% oil severance tax, increasing vehicle registration fees by $12, and shifting tribal revenues from transportation to the General Fund. Combined these revenue sources would generate about $17.5 billion over the next 18 months.

Specifically, with respect to Libraries, there has been no reduction to the Public Library Foundation, the Transaction Based Reimbursement Program, or California State Library operations. According to the Budget Document, the Governor does propose a $3.4 million net decrease to the CSL for one-time costs for the Integrated Library System Replacement Project (-$1.3 million), and for costs of relocation during renovation (-$2.0 million). The Budget will continue to provide ($81,000) and ($549,000) respectively for these same programs.

We will have Jean Bedord on hand to discuss "eBooks Hit Critical Mass: Where Do Libraries Fit with Oprah?”. There are book databases, and there are downloadable books, not to be confused with ebook readers (Oprah loves the new Amazon Kindle). Jean will explore which of these formats make sense for your library.

Like solo librarians, Jean Bedord wears multiple hats. She teaches part-time at the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University. She is also a findability and search strategist for publishers and vendors in the online information industry (www.EContentStrategies.com). Her articles have been published in Information Today and Searcher, as well as other publications. Jean has just published a book "I've Got A Domain Name – Now What??? A Practical Guide to Building a Website and Your Web Presence" which is available as both an ebook and traditional print format.

January 30, 2009, at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. This

Ms. Aldrich's talk is being given as part of a meeting of the Sacramento
Area Health Sciences Librarians (SAHSL). SAHSL meets
quarterly to provide an opportunity for health sciences librarians to
network. As part of the meeting, we also arrange for
presentations on various topics.

We are thrilled that Ms. Aldrich will be joining us on January 30 and we
are excited about the prospect of meeting and

Teaching with Digital Collections in the Liberal Arts Curriculum

What does it take to launch a digital asset management system that improves access and helps integrate digital materials into the curriculum? Through funding from the Keck and Booth Ferris Foundations, Reed College has been investigating this question in the arts & humanities curriculum. The culmination of this project will be a two-day symposium to be held on the Reed College campus.

We invite you to come together with your colleagues to learn and share your experiences working with digital collections in the liberal arts context. This event is recommended for instructional technologists, IT staff, librarians and library support staff, visual resources professionals, and anyone interested in support for teaching with digital collections, particularly images.

There is no conference fee, and the single-track event will feature:

-A meet-and-greet dinner on Thursday (opening) night;
-Light breakfast, lunch and dinner on Friday; and light breakfast on Saturday;
-Two keynote guest speakers;

Back in 2006, your SLA-SF Bay Region Chapter Awards Committee met to create new categories of awards. We sought to expand our opportunities to thank our volunteers and members for their service to the profession and the chapter. Last year, you may recall that we wrapped up the term by honoring the entire Executive Board and Advisory Committee with our ABCD Award for service "Above and Beyond the Call of Duty."

Although we did not grant it that year, the committee also created a Vendor Appreciation Award to honor those supporters whose financial contributions significantly enhanced the camaraderie, communications or overall mission of the chapter.

SLA 2009 Centennial Conference Stipend

San Jose SLIS Ranks First in Salaries for Library School Graduates

San Jose SLIS Ranks First in Salaries for Library School Graduates

Graduates of the San Jose School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) earned the highest average starting salary of any Library School, according to a recent Library Journal salary survey. With an average starting salary of $49,293, San Jose SLIS graduates also benefit from an excellent return on investment – their starting salaries are high, and their tuition is considerably more affordable than most other library schools.

When compared with Information Schools, the Library Journal salary survey ranked San Jose SLIS third for average starting salaries. However, the first ranked school, the University of Michigan, has local tuition costs that are nearly four times higher than those of San Jose SLIS – $43,584 for Michigan’s in-state students and $11,997 for local San Jose students, known as “regular session”. Out-of-area students have an even better return on investment when they choose San Jose SLIS. At Michigan, out-of-state students pay more than double what local students pay, or $88,176 in total tuition. San Jose’s out-of-area or “special session” students pay just a few thousand dollars more than local students, or $18,877.

Local students at San Jose SLIS pay the lowest tuition of any of the top ten ranked schools in the Library Journal salary survey. San Jose’s out-of-area students pay significantly less in tuition than all of the other top ten schools, except for Southern Connecticut State University.

“We’re extremely pleased to offer our students an exceptional return on their investment of tuition dollars,” says Ken Haycock, San Jose SLIS Director. “We work hard to offer a high quality, affordable graduate degree. Salary survey results show that our graduates can turn their degree into high paying jobs.”

“While there may be a perception that salaries for our graduates are higher because they live in California, that simply isn’t the case,” adds Haycock. “Because students can earn their degree with us through a fully online program, our students live in 45 states and 12 countries.”

2008 Study Includes Chapter on Compensation for Competitive Intelligence Pros

Alexandria, Virginia, November 20, 2008 – The Special Libraries Association (SLA) today announced the results of its annual salary survey. For the second year, the SLA Salary Survey and Workplace Study contains salary information and other data from respondents in SLA Europe in addition to the U.S. and Canada. For the first time, the 2008 study contains a chapter on competitive intelligence (CI) salaries in the U.S.

According to the 2008 survey results, the average salaries for SLA members in the U.S. and Canada have increased yet again. Based on salaries as of April 2008 for U.S.-based respondents, the increase in salaries for 2008 over 2007 was 5.3 percent. The average salary for U.S. survey respondents was US$ 71,812, compared with US$ 69,426 reported in 2007. The average for Canadian respondents was CAN$ 69,971 compared with CAN$ 67,171, a 5.4 percent increase over last year.

Competitive Intelligence on the Rise

The 2008 study includes for the first time a full chapter focusing on the functions of CI and online/business research and analysis, growing areas of responsibility and interest for information professionals. Nearly 20 percent of all survey respondents are now in positions covering these functions. These findings reflect the changing roles of information professionals across the enterprise. The median salary for CI professionals and others in this category is US$ 69,000, compared with US$ 66,000 for all respondents.

European Data

For the second year, the survey included respondents from Europe in addition to those from the U.S. and Canada. The European report is separated into two categories, responses from the U.K. and responses from other European SLA members. The average salary for U.K. respondents is £42,674, with these respondents reporting a 4.2 percent increase over the previous year. For other European members, the average salary was €64,986, an increase of 7.0 percent from 2007.

All four sets of data—U.S, Canada, U.K, and other European countries-- are reported in the local currency in the published report. However, below is a comparison (in descending order) of global mean salaries converted into U.S. dollars at the April 1, 2008, exchange rates:

Gold Coast Library Network Scholarship

The Gold Coast Library Network is awarding two scholarships to students currently enrolled in either a graduate or undergraduate library studies program. Scholarship awards will be $500 for one student enrolled in a graduate library program and $300 for one student enrolled in an undergraduate library program. Awards must be used towards purchase of tuition and/or school-related books.

To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must be:

1) Enrolled at least part time in a post-secondary library education program and

2) Employed at least part time at a library in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara or Ventura county.

CSLA Southern Section Scholarship

Are you a Southern Section member going to school to further your
library career? If so, CSLA Southern Section may have a scholarship
for you. Southern Section offers two scholarship opportunities:
· A $1,000 scholarship for a member of CSLA working towards a teacher
librarian services credential.

· A $500 scholarship for a paraprofessional working towards a school
library technician/paraprofessional certificate program or obtaining a
teaching credential with the ultimate goal of pursuing a teacher
librarian services credential.

The SLA Diversity Leadership Development Program (DLDP) Award aims to accelerate the advancement and visibility of members who represent a diverse population of the Association by mentoring them for more leadership opportunities within the Special Libraries Association, to ensure that the Association remains vital, relevant, and representative of its diverse membership.

Recipients receive: 1.) An award of $1000. The awarded money should assist with airfare and/or accommodations and may cover at least one SLA Continuing Education course 2.) Complimentary registration, provided by SLA, to attend the annual conference and specific ticketed events as appropriate 3.) An assigned mentor who is an Association leader.

To Be Eligible for the Award:

* Applicant must have been a member of SLA for at least 1 year.
* Applicants are eligible based on SLA's definition of diversity, which includes but is not limitied to race, ethnicity, physical abilities, religious beliefs and/or sexual orientation.
* Applicant must have at least 3 years of professional library/information experience.
* Applicant cannot be a current SLA DLDP Committee member.

Only applicants who meet all the eligibility requirements at the time of application are submitted to the DLDP Committee for award consideration.

Expectations of the Award Recipients:
* Award recipients must attend the SLA Annual Conference the year the award is given. (As part of the registration package, SLA will pay for the Awards Ceremony ticket.)
* Award recipients must demonstrate a willingness to learn about SLA and have the potential for leadership responsibilities.
* Award recipients should be willing to attend DLDP sessions and events at the Annual Conference and participate in a group photo session administered by SLA.

Emerald Research Grant Awards

"The Emerald Group Publishing Limited has a long-standing commitment to
support the research community via a number of methods including doctoral
and research fund awards, benefiting both those at the outset of their
academic careers and the more established researchers."

The Emerald Research Grant Award will be awarded to individuals seeking
support to conduct research in business librarianship. The funds may be
used at the discretion of the award recipients. Award recipient must be an
ALA member or at least one member of a collaborative team must be an ALA
member. Recipients may be asked to present their findings at a public
BRASS event within two years of receiving the award (at the discretion of
the BRASS Executive Committee). Recipients will also be required to
acknowledge the Emerald Research Grant when publishing or presenting their
research.

Two $5,000 awards will be presented. The awards (check and citation) will
be presented at the RUSA Awards Ceremony at the annual conferences each
year. Recipients will be required to attend the RUSA Awards Ceremony.

Selection of Review Committee
A committee consisting of three members of BRASS will review proposals and
select the award recipients. An Emerald representative will serve as
ex-officio (non-voting) member to provide input and suggestions. Specific
duties of committee members will include soliciting proposals and
selecting winners for each of the two years for which this award will be
given.

Deadline: Research proposals will be due by the bsuienss day nearest

Screening of Candidates/Review of Proposals
Candidates will be asked to submit a detailed proposal outlining their
proposed research project; methodology, scope and timetable; how this
project fits into the existing literature; and projected outcomes,
including a statement outlining how this research will benefit the library
profession. Candidates? proposals will be reviewed for thoroughness;
potential to positively impact the library profession; and potential to
provide a useful addition to the existing library literature. Proposals
will be accepted from both individual researchers and those working
collaboratively. At least one member of a collaborative team must be a

ALTADENA LIBRARY OPEN ON VETERAN’S DAY WITH CELEBRATION

Although most local libraries will be closed on November 11, Veteran’s Day, Altadena Library District’s main and branch library will both be open for business as usual with lots to choose from to keep both children and adults entertained and informed. All those who need a place to study, computers with internet access, free loan DVDs, audio books, or something good to read are more than welcome to stop by and check out the library.

In addition to opening its doors, the library will celebrate the day with a program at 7 pm with World War II bombardier pilot and author “Norm” Stevens whose stirring tale, An Innocent at Polebrook, “tells the true story of an l8-year old plucked from his small hometown in California who found himself at l9 riding in the nose of a heavy bomber at Polebrook, England in 1944 under conditions he could not possibly have imagined.”

ALA INVITES APPLICATIONS TO THE 2009 GOOGLE POLICY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The Washington Office of the American Library Association (ALA) will be participating again in the Google Policy Fellowship program for the summer of 2009. The first class of fellows worked for ten weeks this past summer at ALA Washington and at other public interest organizations involved in debates on broadband and access policy, content regulation, copyright reform, online privacy, and open government. In particular, ALA encourages master's and doctoral students in library and information studies with an interest in national public policy to apply for this fellowship. We expect 2009 to be an especially exciting time to be in Washington...

Those selected as fellows for the 2009 summer will receive a stipend to spend ten weeks contributing to the public debate on technology policy issues -- and ALA's fellow will focus on these issues from the perspective of the library community. The participating organizations from 2008 include: American Library Association, Cato Institute, Center for Democracy and Technology, Competitive Enterprise Institute, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Internet Education Foundation, Media Access Project, New America Foundation, and Public Knowledge. The Los Angeles Public Library, Richard Riordan Central Library in Los Angeles was named one of America's 10 Coolest Public Libraries.

Los Angeles Public Library, Richard Riordan Central Library, Los Angeles
Sure, the LAPL boasts one of the largest publicly funded library systems in the world. But what makes it cool is the way the Richard Riordan Central Library itself and the artwork within it embody the love of books. The library is adorned throughout with mosaics, statues, chandeliers, fences, gates and grilles, each one symbolizing some aspect of reading, writing or knowing.

The vividly painted lobby ceiling intertwines starbursts, rings, checkerboards and the names of Los Angeles' novelists. Elevators are papered with now-obsolete catalog cards. The finial on the tiled pyramid atop the library is a golden hand, entwined by the Serpent of Knowledge holding the Torch of Learning. LA takes its books very seriously indeed: in the early 20th century librarian Charles F. Lummis commissioned a branding iron, "Marcas del Fuego," to "fire-mark" prized books.

The Southern California Association of Law Libraries (SCALL) is pleased to announce its annual mentorship program, which matches students to mentors who are professionals working in law-related libraries and organizations. Our mentors come from a variety of different backgrounds, e.g. academic law libraries, public/county law libraries, government agencies, and private law firms. The mentor program is designed to give you a contact person who can answer your questions and offer advice about the profession.

Mentees must be currently enrolled graduate students in either the UCLA Department of Information Studies or a distance library school program, AND must live full-time in Southern California to be eligible to participate.

The School of Information and Library Science (SILS), University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), is seeking applicants interested in Digital Archiving and Curation and in earning a Doctoral Degree. These Fellowships are funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services.

Eligibility
The Legal History and Rare Books Section of the American Association of Law Libraries, in cooperation with Gale Cengage Learning, announces the first annual Morris L. Cohen Student Essay Competition.

The essay competition is named in honor of Morris L. Cohen, Professor Emeritus of Law at Yale Law School. Professor Cohen’s scholarly work is in the fields of legal research, rare books, and historical bibliography.

The purpose of the contest is to encourage scholarship in the areas of legal history, rare law books, and legal archives, and to expose students to the American Association of Law Libraries and law librarianship.

Requirements
Currently enrolled students attending accredited graduate programs in library science, law, history, or related subjects are eligible to enter the competition. Students may be enrolled either full- or part-time. Membership in the American Association of Law Libraries is not required.

Papers may be on any topic related to legal history, rare law books, or legal archives. No paper, or portion of a paper, that has been published or accepted for publication before April 15, 2009 will be eligible for consideration. Papers and all supporting documentation must be submitted by April 15, 2009. The winner will be announced by May 15.

Prize
The winner will receive a $500.00 prize from Gale Cengage Learning. In addition, the winner will receive up to $1000 to be applied towards expenses associated with attendance at the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Law Libraries. The 2009 Annual Meeting will be held July 25-28 in Washington, D.C. Attendance at the Annual Meeting is encouraged, but not required.

Leadership Grant (Institute of Museum and Library Services - IMLS) to improve library service

The project provides for three (3) SLIS graduate students to work as Research Assistants with

One Book/One Glendale

Glendale Public Library is hosting its second annual One Book/One Glendale citywide reading event in October and November. This year we are partnering with Glendale Community College to feature Enrique’s Journey, by Sonia Nazario. The book began life as a Pulitzer Prize-winning series of articles that Ms. Nazario wrote for the Los Angeles Times in 2002. It is the true story of Enrique, a young man from Honduras, who undertakes a harrowing journey through Central America and Mexico to rejoin his mother, who immigrated to the United States when Enrique was a child. The author risked her own safety to retrace Enrique’s dangerous route.

Sonia Nazario will appear at Glendale Central Library on Wednesday evening, November 5, at 7:00 p.m. and at Glendale Community College on November 6 at noon. Libraries of all types are invited to apply for the $3,000 Scholastic Library Publishing National Library Week Grant, which will be awarded to the library with the best public awareness campaign incorporating the 2009 National Library Week theme, “Worlds connect @ your library®.”

All proposals must use the theme, which uses The Campaign for America's Libraries’ “@ your library” brand, on any and all promotional and publicity material supporting National Library Week activities. Guidelines for using the brand are available on the campaign Web site at www.ala.org/@yourlibrary under the “download logos” section.

The grant is sponsored by Scholastic Library Publishing, a division of Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, and is administered by the Public Awareness Committee of the American Library Association (ALA). Carlsbad City Library Learning Center Opening

The Carlsbad City Library is excited to announce the opening of a new facility, the Carlsbad City Library Learning Center.

This new building establishes a permanent home for two long-term library programs that have been providing service to the community for decades from leased locations.
The Adult Learning Program began offering literacy services in 1984 as one of the initial 27 public libraries funded with grants through the California State Library.
The Centro de Informacion began offering bilingual library services in 1991 through the State Library's Partnerships for Change program. These two programs are merging together to provide a library collection for all ages, literacy tutoring, homework assistance and study rooms, public computer access and computer classes, special programs and events, and community information and referrals.

Established in 1975, Bibliotecas Para La Gente (BPLG) advocates for and provides library services to the Spanish speaking and Latino communities of Northern California. BPLG has established a $1000 scholarship for a current or new SJSU SLIS student who has demonstrated an interest in furthering the goals of BPLG in providing library service to the Spanish and Latino communities. Scholarship Deadline: August 15, 2008

Eligibility requirements:
 Candidate must live in Northern California.
 The candidate must demonstrate experience and/or interest in working with the Latino and Spanish speaking community on the job and/or as a community volunteer.
 The candidate must provide evidence of Spanish language proficiency and/or cultural competency in the Latino community. Candidate can document language proficiency and cultural awareness through job and/or community experience in the essay or through reference letters.
 A candidate applying to the SJSU SLIS program must provide documentation of admittance to the university prior to distribution of scholarship.
 Current SLIS students are eligible to apply if they have completed less than 12 units by the end of the Spring 2007 semester.
Application requirements include:
 A 2-3 page personal statement describing work or volunteer experience with a Latino and/or Spanish speaking community. Describe the information needs of these communities in Northern California, and how the candidate can contribute to their information needs. Candidates should demonstrate their technological awareness by suggesting how technology may be used to provide services to the Latino community. Include a description of any leadership role in work/volunteer experience.
 Two reference letters: One letter from a librarian who is aware of your work and/or community service or desire to work in the library; a second letter from a community leader who knows your career goals, work and/or community service.
 A recent resume that includes library and community service work.
 New students must document application to the SLIS program through an acceptance letter and include their most recent transcript. Current SLIS students can submit unofficial transcripts from the MYSJSU account.
Additional considerations:
 The scholarship recipient will attend a BPLG meeting in September for formal recognition and will be given partial payment of $500. Travel expenses to the meeting will be reimbursed.
 The remaining balance will be awarded at the end of the Fall 2008 semester upon receipt of transcript documenting completion of units attempted.

This year’s APHA meeting will take place in San Diego, CA from
October 25 - 29, 2008. Its theme is Public Health Without Borders.

The Grace and Harold Sewell Memorial Fund, Inc. is offering stipends to
librarians and other information professionals to help cover the costs
of their attending and/or participating in this meeting. Successful
applicants from the greater San Diego area will receive a stipend of at
least $650. Successful applicants from outside greater San Diego will
receive at least $1,000. This amount covers most of the APHA Membership
at $195 and Early Bird (pre-August 15, 2008) Member Registration at
$380. Though significant, these amounts will NOT cover all costs, so
stipend recipients will need to find additional monies to cover
remaining costs.

Call for Applications

The Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) is pleased to announce the 2008-2009 year of the leadership program jointly sponsored by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and AAHSL. The NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellows Program is focused on preparing emerging leaders for the position of library director in academic health sciences libraries.

"This collaboration of NLM and AAHSL is of exceptional value for the next generation of directors, and the program has benefited both fellows and mentors," said AAHSL president Linda Watson. "Our evaluation shows that it has contributed to the quality of leadership in the profession."

Fellows will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in a variety of learning settings, including exposure to leadership in another environment. They will be paired with mentors who are academic health sciences library directors. In addition to the individual relationship with their mentors, fellows benefit from working collaboratively with other fellows and mentors. Experienced program faculty and mentors will provide content and facilitation for the cohort. The program takes advantage of flexible scheduling and an online learning community to minimize disruption to professional and personal schedules. The sponsors will provide financial support for up to five fellows and will underwrite travel and meeting expenses.

Thirty fellows have participated in the program since its inauguration in 2002. To date, seven former fellows have assumed director positions.

"The program helped sharpen my focus and convinced me that becoming a director was a worthwhile ambition," noted Jett McCann, fellow, class of 2004-2005, and director at Georgetown University. "It exposed me to what a variety of directors actually do and how they work. The comradeship forged with my cohort colleagues continues; we are each others' best critics, advisers, and champions."

Jerry Perry, fellow, class of 2002-2003, and director at University of Colorado, said, "It provided an opportunity to reflect and put my career goals into perspective. The relationship and dialogue I established with my program mentor serve as an ongoing source of insight and discovery, and I'm certain it will make me a better director."

Judith Robinson, mentor, class of 2007-2008, and assistant dean at Eastern Virginia, stated, "As a new mentor in the program, I was thrilled with the opportunity to work in such a collaborative environment with the fellows and other mentors. The experiences with external experts and the chance to work closely with my fellow resulted in one of my most rewarding years as a director."

Program Overview

The one-year program design is multi-faceted: three in-person leadership institutes; attendance at an Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) annual meeting; a yearlong fellow/mentor relationship; Web-based courses and discussions on issues related to library leadership; and a two-week site visit to the mentor's home library (in one or two-week segments).

The program is designed to:

· Introduce fellows to leadership theory and practical tools for implementing change at organizational and professional levels;

· Introduce fellows to critical issues facing academic health sciences libraries;

· Develop meaningful professional relationships between fellows and mentors that give fellows access to career guidance and support;

· Expose fellows to another academic health sciences library and its institutional leadership under the guidance of their mentors;

· Examine career development and provide models of directors to fellows;

· Create a cohort of leaders who will draw upon each other for support throughout their careers;

· Promote diversity in the leadership of the profession; and

· Offer recognition to emerging leaders and enhance the competitive standing of fellows as they pursue director positions.

Application

The NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellows Program is currently accepting applications and nominations for the August 1, 2008, deadline for potential fellows and mentors for the 2008-2009 experience. Candidates for fellow should have a strong interest in pursuing a directorship in academic health sciences libraries, as well as a minimum of five years of department head level or higher responsibility, or equivalent experience, in an academic health sciences library, hospital library, or other library-related setting. Applications from qualified minority candidates are encouraged. Mentors should have at least five years' experience as director of an academic health sciences library.

Travel Fellowships to ISWC 2008

We are happy to announce that two organizations have generously contributed funds to support participation by full-time students in ISWC 2008. The Semantic Web Science Association (SWSA) and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) will provide 10,000 Euro and $20,000 respectively, with NSF funds being earmarked to support students attending U.S. Universities. We anticipate that the SWSA funds will support 10 awards of 1000 Euro, and that the NSF funds will support 13 awards of approximately $1500.

Our goal is to encourage students who want to become part of the Semantic Web research community, and we hope that participation in ISWC 2008 will be a significant event in the graduate careers of the selected students.

In selecting applications for travel support, preference will be given to students selected to participate in the doctoral consortium, followed by students who are first author on a paper accepted at the conference, followed by students who have other authorship on a conference or related workshop paper.

Six Continents /

*Alexandria, Virginia, USA, 27 June 2008* - Exhibition and attendance
figures for the Special Libraries Association's (SLA) Annual Conference
and INFO-EXPO held in Seattle, 15 - 18 June, exceeded planners'
expectations and included, for the second year in a row, SLA members
from every chapter around the globe.

Final attendance figures for SLA 2008 totaled 5,011 individuals from six
continents. Of that number, 845 participants were first-time SLA
conference participants. SLA's INFO-EXPO, the largest information and
knowledge management exposition in North America and the most
significant gathering of content and technology providers in the world,
featured 283 companies and organizations and 464 total booths. SLA
welcomed 50 new exhibitors in 2008.

"SLA delivered yet another relevant and cutting-edge conference this
year. Going by the positive feedback, inspired discussions, and the
excitement I heard from attendees, I think it is safe to say SLA 2008
lived up to its theme of Breaking Rules and Building Bridges," said SLA
Chief Executive Officer Janice R. Lachance. "SLA members are breaking
the rules that define the profession and their place in it. They are
constantly shattering stereotypes and conventional wisdom surrounding
what it means to be a librarian or info pro in the 21st century."

Lachance continued, "The programs offered in Seattle were designed to
help info pros and librarians build more value into the services they
provide, and expand into new roles in today's information economy," said
Lachance. "Next year SLA will celebrate its centennial, and the
Centennial Conference in Washington, DC, will be the perfect opportunity
to honor our past, while looking toward tomorrow and beyond. The
excitement for the future of this profession is palpable and this energy
and enthusiasm should carry us through another 100 years!"

*Flashback*

SLA 2008 officially began on 15 June at the Washington State Convention
Center with the Grand Opening of the INFO-EXPO exhibit hall. Later that
evening, SLA's 2008 Award Recipients were honored for their
accomplishments in the information industry during the Opening General
Session and Awards Ceremony. It was an evening very much focused on the
future of information. The Opening General Session began with a
description of SLA's new Innovation Laboratory by SLA President Stephen
Abram. He described how the lab will allow SLA members to experiment
with Enterprise 2.0 tools in a risk-free environment.

The session culminated with a keynote presentation featuring Google's
Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist, one of the "Fathers of the
Internet," Dr. Vint Cerf, who was interviewed by award-winning
journalist Charlie Rose. After being introduced, Rose, who was seated
next to Cerf, told the audience of librarians, info pros and their
partners, "What we do is dependent upon good information, and you are
the masters of that." Both approachable and inspiring, Cerf provided a
fascinating perspective on how the Internet started, where we are now,
and the major issues we are facing. When asked by Rose about the future
of content delivery, Cerf struck a chord within the audience of info
pros and librarians. "Somehow, when all this is matured, everyone will
have access to the knowledge of everyone who wants to share what they
know. That idea is so wonderful. You can learn something from anyone,"
said Cerf.

*Seth Godin Schools SLA on Marketing Value*

Seth Godin is a best selling author, entrepreneur, and agent of change.
Addressing the audience of librarians and information professionals
during the Closing General Session, he shared a very powerful message.
Taking a moment to compliment SLA members, Godin said, "It's hard for me
to find smart audiences. I wanted to talk to this group because you get
it-you understand opportunities. Every person in this room is a
marketer. Librarians spread ideas-truth is meaningless if it doesn't
spread-we need to figure out how to do that."

According to Godin, marketing and story telling can change employers'
perception of info pros. He discussed how important it is to "clear
through clutter" to get to remarkable bits. That as consumers, we see
clutter on the store shelves, clutter from the content providers
(databases, books, journals, websites, portals, etc.) and, according to
Godin, "we are dealing with clutter with more clutter."

His advice to librarians and info pros, "Yelling and hoping to make
enough money doesn't work. People won't be forced. When people know the
story we want them to know, we've done a good job." He said, "Either
keep pushing against the wind or change what you're doing and have the
wind at your back. Tell your story."

*2008 Annual Membership Meeting*

Following a well received report from SLA Treasurer Sylvia James, the
membership heard from SLA CEO Janice R. Lachance, who delivered her
annual State of the Association address. Lachance emphasized that SLA is
undertaking an extensive, research-based examination of the profession,
and of SLA's position in the evolving information economy.

The CEO's upbeat and inspirational speech touched on all of the
innovations and enhancements the association has made in new products
and services in the last year, as well as provided motivational words to
the audience. Lachance said, "You are intelligent, caring, dedicated
professionals who do not tend to call attention to yourselves but...
rather...let your work speak for itself. Applying old stereotypes...some
may see you as passive. I KNOW you are passionate."

She continued, "It is time for this passion to be recognized and
appreciated by everyone. It is time for you to take control of YOUR
future. I have never been more optimistic about the future of this
profession and I have never been more confident of your success."

SLA members were then updated on the progress of the research-based
project by members of the team from Fleishman-Hillard and Outsell, as
well as given a brief preview of the plans for the SLA Centennial
Celebration in 2009. The SLA Annual Conference and INFO EXPO celebrating
100 years of SLA will be held in Washington, DC, 14-17 June. The theme
for the Centennial conference is: "Information to Inspiration: Knowledge
& Vision Shaping the Future."

Registration is now open for the Lawyers for Libraries/Florida training, scheduled for Friday, November 14, 2008 in Tampa. This is the first Lawyers for Libraries training in Florida, and the 14th overall.

The Lawyers for Libraries Institute is primarily intended to equip attorneys with tools they need to effectively defend the First Amendment in libraries. Participants will be instructed by practicing attorneys specializing in First Amendment law and will be eligible for continuing legal education (CLE) credits for their participation.

Lawyers for Libraries workshops are open to licensed, practicing attorneys retained to represent or advise libraries on legal issues. Library trustees or board members who are responsible for establishing library policy may also attend. Librarians may attend if they are accompanied by a library attorney - in fact, we encourage librarians to participate to better discuss the specific policy needs of their public, academic, or school library.

Among the topics to be covered during the institute are:

* Privacy, law enforcement requests for records and the USA PATRIOT Act;

* Public forum analysis and libraries, including developing meeting room and display case policies;

* Internet filtering and the ongoing repercussions of the Supreme Court's CIPA decision;

* How to respond to attempts to censor books and other library materials.

In addition, a panel of librarians will discuss their real-world experiences with creating and enforcing library policies.

"Lawyers for Libraries has helped hundreds of attorneys, trustees and librarians better understand the case law and legislation related to their work on behalf of libraries. These participants have gone on to improve libraries across the country by drafting strong policies, providing advice to those facing difficult questions, conducting trainings and being advocates for intellectual freedom in their communities."

The training is from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Doubletree Guest Suites Tampa Bay, 3050 North Rocky Point Drive in Tampa. Lodging is available at the newly renovated hotel at just $109 per night.

Minigrant Application Instructions

1. We accept applications from public schools and libraries anywhere in the United States and its protectorates.

2. Funds will not be granted for:
- general operating costs
- administrative costs
- transportation of the audience
- purchase of books, tapes, software or equipment unrelated to a specific program described.

3. Creative programs funded in the past have included:
- Ongoing pen-pal projects bringing disparate communities together,
- Multi-cultural portrait projects,
- Art projects culminating in art shows, murals, or quilts,
- Bookmaking,
- Creation and performance of puppet shows,
- Inter-generational journals.*

* These are examples...we welcome new ideas.

4. Applications will only be accepted if they are submitted on the form and in the space provided without reformating or attachments.

5. Only one application will be considered from each library or school.

6. Applications cannot be accepted for consideration if:
- they are for programs being held in any type of private or parochial school or library,
- they are for duplicated programs,
- they are emailed,
- they are sent by registered mail,
- they require a signature upon delivery,
- they are postmarked after the September 15 deadline of each year.

7. If an award check is not to be made out to the library or school:
- please indicate clearly the name of the entity cashing the check,
- how it is connected to the institution using the award,
- who at that institution is serving as contact for the program and
- how we can reach them.

8. We cannot send you a replacement if you lose the award check.

Library Technical Assistant Program at Capital Community College

For the Fall 2008 semester, Capital Community College, located in
Hartford, Connecticut is offering the following courses as part of its
Library Technical Assistant Program. Courses can be taken for
professional development as well as enrolling in the certificate or
degree program.

Introduction to Reference Services (LIB 104). This course was previously
called Basic Information Sources (LTA 105).
This course is taught totally online.
Faculty: Carl Antonucci
This course prepares students to work in a library's reference
department, assisting patrons seeking information. An overview of
on-line and print resources and reference interview techniques are
included.

Introduction to Library Public Services (LIB 101).

This course prepares the student to work in public service areas,
including circulation, interlibrary loan and reference service.

Computers in Libraries (LIB 103). This course was formerly listed as LTA
103.

This course provides an overview of computers in libraries and the basic
use and maintenance of related hardware and software. Topics include:
computer workstation operating systems; hardware and peripherals;
integrated circulation/cataloging/serials/acquisitions systems; Internet
workstations and HTML; and library LAN's.

Introduction to Visual Communication (COM 105). This course was
previously designated as COM 101.
Thursday 5:30 pm-8:00 pm.

The course introduces students to the operation and maintenance of
audiovisual presentation equipment. Additional class work will include
creating basic presentations using photography, video and computer
software packages. The course will conclude with an overview on distance
learning resources.

Supervised Field Placement (LIB 202).
Day and Time: TBA

This course is a supervised on-the-job experience in a public, academic,
school or special library that will reinforce knowledge acquired in the
classroom. Prerequisite: 4 library courses and permission of the LTA
Program Coordinator.

Web Design and Development (CST 150). This course was previously called
Electronic Publishing for the World Wide Web CIS 150
Days and Times: Tuesday and Thursday, 11:30-12:45. Monday and Wednesday
4:00-5:15.
Students will learn to create HTML documents, format text, add graphics
and multimedia to web pages and create online forms. Students also learn
how to work with tables, control page layouts, design web pages and
scripting for HTML. Emphasis is hands on practice designed to produce a
working HTML coded home page with features such as links, images, color
and text.

Introduction to Software Applications (CSA 105). This course was
previously called Using Microcomputers CIS 105.
Day and Time: Day, evening and Saturday sessions are offered. It is also
offered in a online format.
This course teaches the use of microcomputers as an office productivity
tool. It covers creating and editing word processing documents,
spreadsheets and computerized visual presentations. Currently, the
Microsoft Office software products Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are being
taught in depth. Besides office productivity tools, this course covers
file management using the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Composition (ENG 101). This course was previously called English
Composition ENG 101.
Day and Time: Day, evening and Saturday sessions are offered.
This course covers the study of writing and the writing process.
Students analyze expository and/or literary works and prepare essays
with attention to unity, organization, support and development.
Prerequisite: (a) Level III scores on both writing and reading placement
tests; or (b) successful completion of English 043.

Classes begin on August 27 , 2008. Returning students can register
online. Walk in registration hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday
from 9 am-5 pm, Tuesday from 9 am- 6 pm and Friday from 9 am-3 pm.

The Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) will provide financial assistance to one library professional possessing a masters level degree in library and/or information science to attend the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA.

The APALA 2008 Travel Award will provide $500.00 to support attendance at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference from June 26-July 2, 2008 in Anaheim, California. This will be used to help cover registration and travel expenses. The Travel Award will fund one APALA member to attend the conference in Anaheim.
